Done, done and done!

So January has flown right by and with the end of the month comes the beginning of Isabelle's venture into Year One and the start of swimming and dancing again!
Her class load at dancing has increased, and we will see how she goes with the first week, and then asses whether freeing up an afternoon (or two) might help.
To say that she is excited to start Year One would be an understatement, this kid has such a thirst for knowledge and l.o.v.e.s to learn.

Towards the end of last year I saw this photo (via instagram):

Now my photo a day attempts in the past have been a bit pitiful - but with a list of ideas to keep the interest sparked was a big factor to start. Also choosing to follow along strictly via my trusty iPhone and my beloved instagram I plunged right in, with my first photo being of me (obviously) - fresh out of the pool.

In this post, Chantelle spoke about other photo challenges for other months, and if they are anything like this month I will probably jump in again. It is also drawing me slowly back to blogging, so yay for this poor neglected blog!

Rain Clouds

While taking the dogs for a walk on Wednesday {and Issy was scooter-ing}, the sky started to look like this (love the sun shining through the clouds)

There were a few big fat raindrops falling about halfway through our walk, and we were too far from our house to make a run for it if the heavens decided to open up

Thankfully those few raindrops were all we got while walking.
Issy thought the clouds were following us.
She kept checking the sky, to find the bright blue spots not yet swallowed up by the rain clouds and also to check on the greyness of the sky.

On the home stretch she wanted to race the clouds.
We made it home dry, tired and thirsty.
The rain stayed away until we were all tucked up in bed and dreaming sweet dreams.

It stayed for netball training the next day though.

Saturday

Saturday started out cold, gloomy and a bit wet.... perfect weather for the start of the netball season!

Isabelle plays in the Under 7's team, so the rules are a little different (goes by the name Netta) but she had so much fun.

No photos to show of her in action, as I am her team's coach this year, which also includes umpiring half the game and providing a lot of directions to the players, not just in my team but the team we play against too.

There is not score sheet for Netta, it's about fun and learning the game but Isabelle was very proud that she scored the first goal for our team. She played Goal Attack (GA) for the first half.

I can't wait to see how they progress through the season

School!

"Mum can we play school?"
Five words I predict I will hear a lot during the year.

School is not only quenching Isabelle's thirst for knowledge but also expanding it.
She can be found with her nose in a book, finding words she has learnt at school.

As part of her homework, Issy has a booklet of sight words, words that for different reasons the kids need to learn by sight rather than sounding out. There are 25 words to a booklet and Issy completed the booklet on Thursday night.
To help Issy learn these words, I made up some super quick flash cards on some pink paper so we could play games to help her learn the words by recognsing them, rather than just learn the pattern of the words in the list.

Monday will see a new booklet with new sight words make it's way home in the homework folder and rather than just let those first 25 words get left behind, I stuck them up on a wall in my bedroom so she can still see and practice them.

This afternoon we read each sight word, found sentences we could make using the sight words, and played teachers by getting 'the student' (we took turns in each role) to find the word we said.
Playing teachers moved into playing Harry Potter where I was Professor Dumbledore and Isabelle was Hermione Granger.
Hermonie's school work was a secret, and Dumbledore was not allowed to peek at what she was doing, which was making her own flash cards of the 25 words to be marked by Dumbledore.

Settling in

I think it's safe to say I fell off the photo-a-day wagon :o

It wasn't a definite thing though, and I think when the holidays roll around there will be a photo a day of the big kindy girl.

Four weeks in to school and there is no looking back for Isabelle.
She is l.o.v.i.n.g school and homework and is even adapting to the earlier mornings and earlier bedtimes.
Having dancing two afternoons a week (1.5 hours and 1 hour) and swimming lessons is also working well for her, so much so that we are adding netball to the mix come March.

I had to actually check the calender to see how far into the school term we are, on one hand it is flying by, but on the other Issy settled into it so quickly it feels like we've been doing it for four months, not weeks.

Swimming lessons finish at 5.45, so she just pops her robe on and we head home for her to have a shower and clean her hair.

We swam until the clouds rolled in and it started raining.
It was wonderful having a change from the stinking hot weather we've had all week.
I predict that we will be back at Nan's all next weekend :)

[Technically this photo was taken Friday night, but it was pass midnight so it counts as Saturday's photo :)]

Covering books is something that does not get done too often (start or every school year) and I was a little rusty with my technique, but it got done.

Water was added to Nan and Grandad's pool, so we spent the afternoon swimming, which was an awesome end to such a stinking hot week.

The forecast for next week is looking a little cooler than this week, thank goodness!

We were able to get into Isabelle's classroom to get a photo of her at her desk :)

She is on the Green table and is "surrounded by boys.... oh and Hanna is on my table too", and even though she is not in the same classroom as her best friend from preschool, she is settling in really well.

Another great day at school today.
Issy is getting the morning routine under her belt, and we left home a little earlier than yesterday which gave her time to have a play with some of her Kindy friends.

She is also picking up the afternoon routine too, this is how I found her uniform after she got changed:

And after another hot day (though not as bad as yesterday)a slurpee treat was needed on the way home

And catching up on some 'Sabrina' in the "air-corn" helped cool this big girl down.

Tomorrow is her first full day, which is her first sport day also, so she is looking forward to wearing her sports uniform.

She had a wonderful time in class, and cannot wait to go back tomorrow and do it all over again. She only wished it was a full day rather than another half day. Thursday sees her start attending school or the whole day and she cannot wait until then

First Day

Today is Isabelle's first day at Kindergarten.

Excited, nervous, worried and happy are just a few of the emotions that are floating around today {and not just for Issy}.
Isabelle has been counting down to this day since the start of the Christmas holidays and is more than ready to get started at school.
This morning started off with breakfast cooked by Aunty Amanda, and was just a relaxed time for Issy to get ready for school.
We arrived at school {after a few photos at home, and by few, I mean I got maybe three good ones - she was very eager to get out the door} and just inside the school gate was a table set up with name tags for the new Kindergarten students.
We found Issy's tag, and as we made our way into the school one of the Year Six students took Issy by the hand and led her off to where the Kindy classes were waiting for the bell to ring.
She sat and listened to the Principal's welcome back message and then after a super quick goodbye from me, she was off to her classroom. She looked a little nervous, but there was no tears {from either of us} so that was a plus.

This year, the teachers were trying a new first day routine and the parents were asked to wait in the undercover area while the kids went off to class, so there was no opportunity for a photo of Issy sitting at her school desk. :(

There was a morning tea for the new Kindergarten parents, and when there I asked the Principal if there would be a chance to get a photo of Isabelle at her desk, and he told me he would talk to the teachers but later this week should be fine.

Last night we read a book that Aunty Amanda lent her called The Kissing Hand and even came with the character called Chester.
Chester headed off to school with Isabelle today, but first needed a special photo with her :)

Today is only a half day, so I will be heading back to pick her up at 12.30, and then we are heading over to preschool, so she can show her teachers her school uniform and to say hello.

Counting down the days until she gets to put on the uniform and head off to Kindergarten.

Everything she owns and needs for school is labeled.
The school bag is packed.
The uniform is ironed and hanging on the door waiting to be worn.
The hair style has been decided {she is going with "a headband braid, and the rest of the hair out"}.
The card and present for her teacher has been made.

Amanda found a few awesome teacher appreciation present ideas and was sharing them with me when she came across a blog that spoke about giving a welcome back present.
Issy loves to make and give gifts, and hopefully this will help those first morning nerves she has on Tuesday.

At the Zoo, waiting for the Seal Show to start.

We went to the Zoo today with Aunty Emily.
It was lots of fun, and quite busy.
We got to see a lot of the shows and talks, and made our way to almost every animal there. Riding in the sky safari was also lots of fun :)

We headed down to the local Australia Day fireworks.
First stop was a ride on the merry-go-round {with the golden ticket}.

There was entertainment and rides all day, but we chose to stay indoors {in the air conditioning} and venture out just for the fireworks, and some fish and chips for dinner.

We found a patch of grass that hadn't yet been claimed, and shared the fish and chips while waiting for the fireworks to start. We were in a good spot to see the fireworks

And headed back to the car after the last firework had been lit.

She loves doing her own hair, and all the hair clips and headbands that never really got used {when her hair was constantly in a ponytail} are now in rotation.
The mirror is a hand-me-down from Aunty Amanda, and she loves to set up her desk just like Aunty Amanda to do her hair :)

Big fat rain drops started falling while I was cooking dinner on the bbq, so Issy came outside to play in the rain, and by the time she got out the door, they had stopped.

Santa gave Issy two tickets to see the Disney Live! Three Classic Fairytales, and finally the big day arrived!
After getting dressed and her hair done, I asked her if I could take a quick photo of her and this ^ is how she posed herself.

Needless to say she had a great time, and kept telling me that Santa gave her a great present.

Newcastle Permanent is currently holding it's Cinema Under the Stars program which runs through the school holidays in selected towns and cities.

We took along our picnic blanket, dinner and some movie snacks and invited Uncle Robbie and Aunty Sara to come along and join the fun.

We headed off to the beach this afternoon with plans to swim in the rock pool.
Issy is not a fan of the size of the ocean, and usually just plays on the sand when we go, but I think she finds comfort in the pool because it was 'walls' which will stop her from floating out to sea.
When we arrived, the water in the rock pool was about the size of a large puddle, filled with kids.
So we made our way to the bit of beach next to the rock pool and set ourselves up amongst the other families.
And then we went swimming!
Issy actually came out with me, and was quite content to swim to the shore and back to me on her own, and was happy to be in my arms when the water was too high for her to stand.
We swam, made sandcastles and even swam a bit more.
At one stage Issy was heading off to the water's edge to wash her hands, and ended up wading out til the water was about chest level.

And Issy found a pattern her feet made while she spun.
Don't you love what she calls it :)

This afternoon she is off to Nan's house for a slumber party with her cousins.
She has been excited all day and passed some time experimenting with different glitter faces using the glitter lava she received for Christmas.
There was also a mustache, beard and cheeks but after it got stuck in her hair and had to be combed out she moved on to a safer activity :)

Issy cannot wait to go swimming at their house, and insisted on wearing her swimmers today when we visited just in case the pool was finished.
While we were there Grandad's friend finished digging the hole, so there is still a little more work before any swimming can be done.

Today was spent with her bestest friend in the whole entire world!
We went up to The Hunter Valley Gardens for the day, and they had a great time.
While having a morning tea break, they were checking out the map and discussing all the plants and gardens we were going to see.

We spent the afternoon with a friend from preschool who is going to the same school as Isabelle.
They have a pool, so Issy swam 90% of the time we were there, only getting out to have a snack and then having a quick play with the Barbies.

It seems to be the only one Issy can do at the moment.

We saw Tangled today
and we both really enjoyed it.
Snuggles were needed in the sadder parts of the movie, but there were many funny parts that had us laughing along with the rest of the cinema.
We went with Nan, Aunty Amanda and Aunty Em and Issy's two cousins. Thankfully Nan bought the tickets online because our session time was sold out!

Such a sweet face, that suddenly looks a lot older with this hair cut.
It's the shortest her hair has been since it started growing.
The hairstyle was at her request, and she loves being able to brush it herself and not have to worry about tying it up.

Washing her own hair (with a little help) is something that Isabelle has started doing recently.
Having a hair cut helps a lot, not as much to wash means rinsing is easier which is the step she insists on doing herself.

A couple of photography blogs I read do a Photo a Day, some for a year, the holiday seasons, and some for just a month and it always makes me want to do it to. I have tried, and not stuck to the whole year for two years.

So this year I am starting out small, a photo for every day of January.
Who knows is it will be an on going thing, or every other month...

Teacher Gifts

Isabelle loves giving presents, she loves the finding just the gift for her friends and family, and writing in the cards.
While Christmas shopping a week or so ago, she told me that loves Christmas shopping, I asked her why and she replied, "I just do!"

So when it came time to start preparing for Issy's preschool teacher's gifts, she wanted to be involved in every step.
While shopping we couldn't find that right something that showed the appreciation we have for the wonderful year Isabelle has had, so we decided to go the homemade track.

Last year we did Bakerella's Cowgirl Cookies in a Jar and were thinking of doing them again this year (for different teachers) but Issy really wanted to bake something, so we cooked them this year.

Forgot to get a photo of the finished product (whoops), but Issy was very proud of her baking, and couldn't wait to give them to her teachers.
Her teachers were very touched that she wanted to take the time to make something special for them.

End of year Concert

Earlier this week was the end of year concert at Preschool.
This also means that Issy only has two weeks left at preschool before it's time to say goodbye to that era - which I'm not really ready for, but that is another story...

Isabelle decided to go as an elf this year {not 100% in focus, but you have to work with what you've got [or what you get given]}

Songs were sung, dances were danced and fun was had all around!

Isabelle also received her portfolio which is filled with her work from throughout the year, it is a great keepsake, and also a great way to see how much she has progressed.
Throughout the year, her classroom as had a sign-in sheet for the kids to write their name, which the teachers then took samples from each term and put them side-by-side to show their improvements.

Her preschool has been wonderful the past two years, and it will be sad to say goodbye to all the wonderful teachers and the friends she has made that are going to different schools.

Christmas Island

We have a Christmas CD in the car called "Christmas Classics Wrapped Up" featuring Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Nat King Cole and more.
This is my favourite Christmas CD, and it is quickly becoming Issy's favourite too.

Isabelle loves the camera.
She also loves making videos of herself.
I love coming across these little (or sometimes long) snippets of her while uploading the latest photos and videos from the camera.

FIVE!

The 21st of November was a big day around here.
It holds a lot of importance to one special little girl.
This year it was extra special because that special girl officially went from being a little girl to a big girl.
Little Miss Wise beyond her Years joined the five group, and could not have been happier!

Isabelle actually shares her birthday with another girl at preschool, so the celebrating occurred all weekend, starting off with her swashbuckling pirate party on Saturday.
Invitations were sent out to a few pirate friends:

Play dough set out in the lower corner of the picture and a telescope-decorating-station in the top right corner.
These activities were to tide the pirates over as everyone came, but they all arrived almost at the same time, so they were kind of disregarded.

I am very thankful that I kept the number of party guests down, we invited 9, and Issy rounded it out to 10 - two couldn't make it, so we had a 8 pirates on the day. I feel if we had anymore children, it could have been a little pandemonium-ish :)

The pirates played cannonballs (popping balloons to find treasure), had a treasure hunt, walked the plank and kinda played musical islands (pirate themed musical chairs).
The favourite game of the day was 'walk the plank', with everyone having at least two turns across the plank.

Little Miss cake guru wanted to help with her birthday cake, I on the other hand wanted to surprise her with her cake, but in the end she helped ice and decorate this:

She L.O.V.E.D her cake, and we had enough left over to share with the family the next day at her family party.

Poor poor neglected blog.

My attempt at the 'photo a day' project kinda took a turn for the worse, and I missed a couple of days here and there and then just stopped completely. And most of those photos were taken on my phone anyway...

Issy has officially enrolled into kindergarten for next year. She is super excited about going to school and half of me is excited too, she is going to love going to school, the other is still a little in shock that she is old enough for school.

We saw the musical Wicked in August, which we both loved, and took along my sister for her birthday. We caught the train home, and Isabelle made a lot of movies:

It was enough time for Issy to fall into a deep sleep.

Despite the fact the sky is filled with gray clouds and the forecast is for more and more rain, it is nice to see a rainbow while getting ready in the morning!

It was Isabelle's turn to bring the news box home today.
Which means she can put one or two items in it and take them in for news tomorrow.
I think this is the hardest decision she has had to make.
If she could, I think she would pack her whole room!

We have had plans to see a movie with my friend and her son for a while now, and the day kept getting put back due to conflicting schedules.
The stars finally aligned and we were able to see the movie today.
She was so cute looking out for Zac, making sure he was okay throughout the whole thing!

She wanted Sasha to sleep with her tonight.
I think this has been the quickest she has gone to sleep in a long time.
And she didn't get out of bed once either!
I went down to her room to check she had in fact gone to sleep and this is how I found them.

I think this is possibly the first place to 'flood' when we get a bit of rain around here. From memory the road cuts through a floodway.
It also happens to be the quickest way to my sister's work.
Thankfully the water on the road was not too bad - and my little old car had no worries driving through it.

Isabelle's friend bought these for her at the fair yesterday.
This little friend from pre-school has been away on holidays for six weeks and gt back this weekend.

Long story short, I broke my old nokia, and as it has been discontinued I had to choose another phone.
Enter the iPhone!
I have a feeling a lot more photos will be taken with it :)
This was just after I picked up my new phone. There is a shop selling curling wands and straighteners and they always ask if Issy wants a princess curl in her hair. And nine times out of ten we stop and she gets a curl or two.

Looks like winter has come early.
The 'official' start of winter is not for another two weeks, but with a week full of rain, and temperatures under 20 degrees Celsius, I'm pulling out the warmer clothing.

Made a quick stop to the shops today after dropping Issy at pre-school to buy some clothes suitable for this winter weather, and found this cute jumper:

Think it will go well with her "Full House"/80's look she rocks out every so often? :)

Open day and fair at my sister's school this weekend.
This is the third year we have gone.
We go specifically so Issy can go on the ponies, and to play in Aunty Amanda's classroom.

Can't remember who's tweet I read first about the Bloggers Without Makeup Day, there were quite a few Australian mums who I follow who were going to participate.

I ummed and ahhed about actually doing it, and as it turned out, my camera battery died the day before and I forgot to charge it.
So this afternoon, I was determined to get a photo before midnight and decided a photo for the no makeup day would be good.
Issy wanted to be in the photo with me, and the camera is not such great quality - hence the black and white...
Most days I am sans makeup - and if I am using it, it's usually just eye-liner, mascara and eye shadow.
I've written about being in more photos with Issy before, but I haven't really taken it on board.
There is a blog I read (Fat Mum Slim) and she is doing the 52 week project where she takes a self portrait every week.
Definitely something I should consider, and could incorporate into my 365 project...

It was very windy today.
And quite cloudy.
This was taken around 1.00pm.
Once these clouds settled over, I thought we would have a big down pour... it drizzled, and then the clouds moved on.
Coming home from picking Issy up (3.00pm-ish) and the sky was clear again.
